The Awards are granted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a professional honorary organization which, as of 2003, had a voting membership of 5,816. Actors (with a membership of 1,311) make up the largest voting bloc. The votes have been tabulated and certified by auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers since close to the awards' inception.

Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon (born March 22, 1976) is an Academy Award winning actress best known for her roles in Legally Blonde and Walk the Line.
"Reese Witherspoon defines and redefines the term "America's Sweetheart." Even when the actress is in less than stellar filmatic works, it's hard to point the finger at her. She's eternally likable, appealing and talented. Witherspoon first proved herself as more than just another pretty face with 1999's Election, and now her role as June Carter Cash promises to elevate her to a new status amongst the Hollywood elite, possibly with a new naked gold man to sit upon her mantel come this time next year." Jeff Otto in 'Interview: Reese Witherspoon, The always charming southern bell talks about playing June Carter Cash.'
